Welcome to Damson Class!
My name is Mrs Leneghan and I teach in Damson Class. Working with me in Damson Class in Mrs Nicholson (our LSA), Mrs Fagarazzi in the mornings (who gives targeted support to some children in the mornings) and Mrs Luff (who gives targeted support to some children in the afternoons). Granny also volunteers in Damson class one afternoon a week as well as supporting us with our Reading Skills lessons each day.
Our topic for the Summer term involves focusing on these Power of Reading books - '10 things I can do to help my world’ by Melanie Walsh and 'How to Find Gold' by Viviane Schwarz. Both books have a geography focus - what we can do to improve our environment and map work. As always, we are very excited about our books and we plan to spend lots of time in the grounds, exploring the pond and woodland areas and linking these to our texts.
During the term we will be enjoying reading and writing stories and information texts; in Science we will be learning about plants and trees, including learning the names of common plants and trees in our area. We will also continue to observe and record how the weather changes with the seasons. Our maths learning will continue with place value and ordering and sequencing numbers (counting forwards and backwards to and from 100), learning to count confidently in twos, fives and tens, and learning how to multiply and divide.
We do have a focus in Year 1 on learning our number bonds (all bonds up to and including bonds to 10) and also our bonds for 20. Remember to keep practising these so that we can work our way through the Mighty Multiple awards scheme.
Learning will continue to take place outside as often as possible and children need to be dressed for the weather - warm shower proof coats for the cold and hats for sunny days please.
It is important for children to read and talk about books every day. As they become more confident at decoding words, please encourage them to look out for punctuation and begin to read with expression.
A little bit about me:
I enjoy teaching all subjects but I particularly love Science, English and Art. I adore books and one of my favourite things is sharing books and stories with my class. When I’m not at school I love to spend lots of time outside – either gardening, growing my own veg or going for long country walks with my family.
