Phonics

We use the Read Write Inc Scheme to teach Literacy through synthetic phonics in Reception and KS1.  This is taught discretely five times a week and children are frequently assessed and grouped so that they can make good progress through the scheme.

In Reception and Year 1 we are using the Read Write Inc reading programme which is supported by the phonics scheme. This is taught as part of the daily phonics and reading skills lessons.

Year 1 children also choose from a range of books in the class collection to take home and read.  This gives them the opportunity to apply their phonics skills across different genres.  As their reading develops, children move onto different coloured book levels to ensure the texts provide a level of challenge for them.  Please see the link below.

For Reading in Year 2, we do not follow one scheme directly.  We use a range of high quality books across a wide range of genres. The book colour levels start at Pink and children move off the book colour levels once they have read White books (instead of Lime listed on the Oxford Tree scheme).  Once the levels are completed children become 'Free Readers' which means they can choose any title from a library of longer, more challenging texts in class collections and in the school library.
